2026 Winter Olympics brings increased sports wagering to the Commonwealth

During February’s Winter Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina, Italy, Massachusetts patrons placed over 800,000 wagers on Olympic events generating a gross handle of more than $23.8 million across 13 sports.
Ice Hockey saw most of the action. The men’s and women’s tournaments combined for 731,501 wagers, 91% of all Olympic bets placed in the state, and a gross handle of over $22.2 million – accounting for roughly 93% of the total Olympic gross handle.

Curling accounted for 43,244 wagers and a gross handle of $1.3 million, making it a clear second in both volume and gross handle. Alpine Skiing rounded out the top three in gross handle with $66,830 across 6,065 bets, while Speed Skating attracted 5,476 wagers for a $78,035 gross handle.
On the other end of the spectrum, Ski Mountaineering, making its Winter Olympics debut, saw 782 bets placed for a gross handle of just $3,255.61, the lowest of any sport. Freestyle Skiing ($2,986.66) and Skeleton ($4,608.83) also saw modest handle figures.
