The following is a blog post from MGC Director of Research and Responsible Gaming, Mark Vander Linden:
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has undertaken an aggressive research agenda as part of its commitment to understand the impacts of expanded gaming in Massachusetts. As one deliverable of the ongoing research agenda, MGC is pleased to release a paper summarizing findings from the Social and Economic Impacts of Gambling in Massachusetts (SEIGMA) baseline population survey, a descriptive analysis of data from the Massachusetts Problem Gambling Helpline, and key findings from an online focus group of mental health and substance abuse treatment providers across the state. Accompanying this data are suggested implications for strategic planners. This effort is being led by the University of Massachusetts School of Public Health and Health Sciences and is part of the larger SEIGMA study.
In the coming months, MGC, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and other key stakeholders will use this data along with other sources of information to form a problem gambling services strategic plan intended to strengthen and expand the system of prevention, intervention and recovery supports in Massachusetts.
