At an MGC public meeting on July 16, 2020, Commissioner Gayle Cameron announced that Dr. Alex Lightbown, the MGC’s Director of Racing and Chief Veterinarian, had recently been promoted to Chair of the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI)’s Standardbred Racing Committee.
Founded in 1934, the ARCI brings together horse racing regulators from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, Trinidad-Tobago, and the Equestrian Club of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
ARCI “provides a mechanism for collective policy formation, the exchange of information, research, education and training, integrity advocacy, and the development of reforms and services designed to assist its members operate more effectively and efficiently,” per the organization’s website.
In her new role, Dr. Lightbown will work with other racing jurisdiction members on items like model rule proposals that are suggested by racing commissions, the United States Trotting Association, and other interested parties; and other topics of interest for standardbred racing.
“I am excited to work collaboratively with other ARCI members to continue to set the international standards for harness racing regulation,” said Dr. Lightbown.
“It is certainly our good fortune that we have somebody who is qualified and well-respected in the industry,” said Commissioner Cameron during the public meeting. “When I started getting involved with racing eight years ago, there were very few women in leadership positions, so Dr. Lightbown, congratulations for that.”
