On Monday, September 21, Commissioner Brad Hill hosted an event at MGM Springfield to honor three members of the Gaming Enforcement Unit (GEU) whose quick actions saved a patron’s life earlier this month.
Trooper James Cook, Trooper Justin Mestre, and Officer Denise Matthews were recognized for their response to a medical emergency on the gaming floor on September 8, 2026, when a patron suffered a sudden medical event while gaming. The GEU members, who were patrolling the floor at the time, arrived to find the patron unresponsive, not breathing, and without a pulse. They immediately began CPR for approximately four minutes and delivered two AED shocks before the patron regained consciousness. The patron was transported to the hospital for further care.
“What these officers did on September 8th is the very best of what our public safety officials stand for,” said Commissioner Hill. “Their training, their instincts, and their willingness to act without hesitation is inspiring. The Commission is incredibly proud of them.”
The event also drew remarks from Springfield Police Superintendent Lawrence Akers and MGM Springfield Compliance Director Dan Miller, both of whom praised the officers and thanked the GEU for its continued efforts in keeping patrons at MGM Springfield safe.
Following the remarks, Commissioner Hill presented certificates to Trooper Cook, Trooper Mestre, and Officer Matthews in recognition of their efforts.
