MGC’s Access and Opportunity Committee tours MGM Springfield construction site

16 tour 9-13 (3)-mmmPrior to their regular monthly meeting Tuesday, September 13, 2016, members of the MGC Access and Opportunity Committee (AOC) were invited to tour the MGM Springfield construction site.  Jason Rosewell, executive director of design and construction for MGM presented the design renderings and guided members of the AOC through the site with other MGM colleagues including Randy Pitts, General Superintendent at Tishman Construction.  It was exciting to see the significant progress including concrete slab work , large electrical ducts laid out throughout the site, demolition of buildings and the foundation for the 2nd tallest crane in the Commonwealth ready to lift steel and rebar for the site.

Jason Rosewell pointed out the work being performed to shore up and preserve the facade  of the registered and historic Union House hotel, a location where two US presidents stayed! The AOC also toured the new site of the 129 year old French Congregational Church relocated by MGM 200  yards from its original site, and entered the old Armory building, which was previously home to the South End Community Center.  The group admired the interior wood work and details of the Armory that MGM will work to preserve.  AOC members also met with the asbestos abatement contractor for the former Armory Building – a woman owned business with 5 employees-all woman!

The AOC members were introduced to construction laborers, carpenters, electricians, ironworkers, crane operators including many women, people of color and veterans.  This tour gave the committee members an opportunity to see firsthand the progress and how the work of the committee impacts real lives.
